Gavin’s Spica Chair

It may seem odd, but as many parents know – it can be challenging to simply find a seat that works for a child in a hip spica cast.  We recently received a submission from a child’s parents that decided to take matters into their own hands and create a chair that not only worked, but addressed a few other concerns with a child in a spica cast.

Meet Gavin:

Gavin

When Gavin was put in his Spica cast, his parents were determined to see that his challenges were alleviated. The most common and noticeable trouble was that he wouldn’t be able to sit upright; at least not in any traditional furniture. To combat this, his parents searched for information on how to build a chair to suit their child’s unique situation.

After looking over many different pictures of Spica chairs, they put pen to paper and created their own solution. The end result was extremely successful and simple, so much so that they made two – one for his parent’s and one for their grandmother’s house. The best part? His father designed a tray that attaches onto the main frame of the chair that allows him to eat and play with his toys upright as well!

We know that many children face the same struggles Gavin and his family did. Therefore, we are very happy to be able to provide you with the instructions on how to create your own Spica chair for your child – just as Gavin’s parents did.

Sound too difficult? You may be surprised!  For full story and instructions on how to make your own Spica chair, please download Gavin’s PDF on how to make a Spica chair.
