Joan’s Story

I was born with DDH and had a plaster cast when it was discovered. Only one hip joint worked but I walked fine till age 30 when osteoarthritis in hips meant I had to use a wheelchair for 2 years. Got walking again using walking stick for a while. I had my third child aged 42 and walked with no help but increasing pain till aged 70 when got wheelchair again so now no pain and I live alone and have just written my memoir ‘Winning’

    Hi Joan,

Have you had hip replacements throughout your life? If so how many? I am only asking beacause i was born with congenital hip dysplasia. I am now 35, I have had pao surgey at the age of 21 and was fine for years but i am now in a lot of pain again and my consultant is putting off a total hip replacemnt because of my age. I am also suffering with pain in my knee, i am having a scan on the 27th July to see if anything shows up.

Hi, thanks for your comment, no I didnt have any hip replacements at all, they were not offered at that time. I was lucky that the hips improved and I could walk for many years and have my second and third children, all 7 years apart.

Hi! I was born with congenital hip dysplasia also. The doctor that performed most of my surgeries was is amazing! I had an unusual case as my hip kept coming back out if socket. At 14 yrs old had all screws and hardware removed and did great until 2005 when had hip replacement. Now 2017 feels like my replacement hip is coming in and out of socket, I do have rheumatoid arthritis and both knees are hurting badly again. I am in Ga and my doctor is retired but is so generous that he is calling and trying to help find someone in my area now that can help me. I feel truly blessed to have had a dr that cares and remembers me when has always been so busy and had many patients. Wish all Drs were as kind. God bless you all and hope pain and health is wonderful for you
