This video also shows an example of a mother changing a diaper with a child in a spica cast:
The following steps show another method for keeping the cast as dry and clean as possible.
Step 1:
- Place a sanitary napkin or absorbent material over the genital area. Then you can cut sections of diaper and place them inside the cast. The edges with the plastic side face the cast, and the absorbent side faces the child. This catches any moisture that might get under the edges of the cast.
Step 2:
- Fold the sections of diaper over, but not too tightly. This allows urine to be directed outward into another layer of diaper.
Step 3:
- Place another diaper over all the absorbent material to contain any urine that spills outside.
If the cast gets soiled and starts to smell, you can dab a bit of perfume on the cast itself. This will make it more bearable to be around. Pick a scent that is not overpowering and one you want your baby to smell like. Some parents like Love’s Baby Soft perfume.
If your child’s cast becomes so soiled that a cast change is needed, talk to your doctor about a Gor-tex lining.
