Ultrasound screening at time of birth slightly reduces the risk of surgery

Comments:

A report was published online in Journal of Pediatrics Sept. 29 prior to the print version. The study is from Germany where all babies have free access to routine pediatric hip examination at birth and more than 75% have free ultrasound study in the first six weeks of life. This routine use of ultrasound screening slightly reduced the frequency of surgery, but the authors stated, “even state-of-the-art therapy of developmental dysplasia of the hip diagnosed in the first six weeks of life may not always prevent the need for later operative treatment,”
